Surely there can't be two Gabes who are really funny on the Internet. Well I have found a second Gabe who is even better than the first one. He is my favorite person in all of the Internet/TV/Movies/Culture/All this month.

Let me begin by introducing you to him in a way that will immediately show you what he's all about. That way you can watch this first video and decide if A) you agree with me and want to find out more by reading the rest of the post and commenting about how much you agree, or B) you don't agree and you don't feel like wasting your time.

I already know of one Gabe who is really funny on the Internet, and that’s the one who writes for Penny Arcade. Surely there can’t be two Gabes who are really funny on the Internet. Well I have found a second Gabe who is even better than the first one. He is my favorite person in all of the Internet/TV/Movies/Culture/All this month.

Let me begin by introducing you to him in a way that will immediately show you what he’s all about. That way you can watch this first video and decide if A) you agree with me and want to find out more by reading the rest of the post and commenting about how much you agree, or B) you don’t agree and you don’t feel like wasting your time. Most bloggers wouldn’t be so courteous as to help you with major Internet decisions like this. TMG’s a little different. A special different.

Gabe is the one with the purple tie, FYI.

Now, switch gears for a moment to a blog called Videogum. How did I end up at this blog? I listen to thesixtyone, which has several songs from a music blog called Stereogum, and from there I saw an ad which read “The Hunt For The Worst Movie Of All Time” written about the movie The Family Stone (I, too, hated that movie). After reading the post I was intrigued as to what Videogum was all about. I read a few more of the Worst Movie posts, agreeing with all of them, and loved how poignant the writing was and how the writer was able to bash a terrible movie in a much more elegant way than I could ever hope to with my insanely popular “beratings”.

I started reading more and more of the blog and eventually ended up subscribing and keeping up with every post (there are at least 10 a day) for the last 3 months. When I realized I was addicted to Videogum, I wanted to know more about the writer(s). There are two: a girl named Lindsay Robertson and a guy named Gabriel Delahaye, who goes by Gabe.

I did some research and found out that he is actually a young, normal looking guy (figured he had to be a troll, great writers usually are for some reason), who is actually really funny on camera as well.

Check out another Gabe video making fun of Details magazine and “man style”:

The only problem I have is that I’m afraid Videogum will not be as funny now that I have a face to put with the name (of the writer). That usually seems to ruin it for me because when you take the mystery away things aren’t as intriguing. Why does that happen? In any case Gabe is such a uniquely funny writer that it makes me want to shut down TGM like when they shut down Treadstone on that Bourne movie and all the lights and computers and servers were linked to the same light switch and it all went dark at once. But don’t worry I won’t do that because it only costs me $10 per year to keep TGM running.

*UPDATE*

This one’s really funny too:

I just installed a new WordPress plugin called Intense Debate. Have you ever posted a comment on Digg.com or some place that has a great comment system that lets you reply to peoples’ comments (comment threading) and rate other comments by voting up or down and wished you could have that on your blog? Well now you can with the click of a button, thanks to Intense Debate.

I want to test it out, but I don’t want to be a loser and post comments on my own blog and have a conversation with myself like a crazy person. So instead I decided I’d be a different kind of loser and beg my reader(s) to comment on this blog post.

I will come up with a topic for us to comment on so at least there is a purpose for commenting on this blog post.

The topic is:

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Anything goes…

If that’s too cliche, you can alternatively choose this topic:

Who are your top 5 favorite SNL cast members of all time?

Ok, let’s see if we can break this comment system. Go! Now! Type!

You know what hasn’t changed? How awesome TGM is. It is awesome.

I’m going to toot my own horn here and give you my top 5 favorite TGM posts from the last 2 years. Out of 183 posts (with a total of 939 comments – probably mostly about Katy Perry’s boobs… /wrists), these are the best of the best (IMO).

I got a pingback on my Katy Perry vs. Zooey Deschanel post from an indie music blog entitled Radio Exile. After reading the article, I was a little confused.

Why don’t you take a gander at the article and see for yourself? From what I’ve been able to gather the author is trying to refute the point that these two broads could be twins. If that is indeed the case, I figured he wouldn’t pit an almost identical picture of each woman next to each other. He did. I also expected him to give at least one shred of evidence supporting his hypothesis. He didn’t.

Why, I ask again, did he write this blog post? Is it just an excuse to express his stalker-esque love for the two broads? Why does he choose to refute my wonderful, light-hearted little nugget of a blog post?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy about the traffic it will bring me, and I’m honored that someone stumbled upon my article in Google (or whatever search engine he used). Plus, I love when people have different opinions than me – it makes for good discussions. I just think the content of the article is lacking a bit.

And who doesn’t like calling someone a “broad” every five years or so? It’s satisfying and holy. Broads.

Radio Exile, I’m sorry to say, but you are now labeled in the following category:

FAIL

You aren’t allowed to write an article without any relevant points and then say in summary “I made concise points” and expect it to make your crooked logic straight. I’m not trying to be mean here, just be aware that if you mess with a pathetic bumbling monster of a disarrayed crappy blog like The Gimcrack Miscellany, it’s going to attempt a quiet, meaningless retaliation

Also, I noticed he wasn’t thrilled about The Dark Knight. I’m beginning to think maybe he just has a case of Alternative Complex. You know, the complex where you hate things that are trendy just because they’re trendy. It’s a guess – I could be way off.

One more time, in case you missed it:

* This is obviously all in fun. Check out Radio Exile, and if you like what they have to say drop them a line in the comments. Every blog likes moar comments!

I was reading this post about salt tablets taken during long distance running on this blog about running and started thinking to myself, “why do you need salt if you run for a long distance?” This prompted me to click on the website for S!Caps where I kept seeing the words like sodium, potassium, and phosphate, which all seemed to be underneath the umbrella of electrolytes. Isn’t an electrolyte just a gimmick to get us to buy Gatorade? Isn’t the BEST drink just pure water? Don’t we just like sports drinks because they taste better than water?

I consulted The Oracle to see what indeed an electrolyte was, if our bodies really needed them, and, if so, where we could get more of them when we’re running out. If you are a person who runs marathons you already know all of this. If you are a person who prefers Seinfeld marathons while eating peanut butter out of the jar with a large serving spoon, this can actually be interesting.

The Oracle told me that both muscle tissue and neurons are considered electric tissues, and that these tissues are activated by electrolyte activity. Muscle contraction is dependent on calcium, sodium, and potassium, which are all ions that make up an electrically conductive medium, or an electrolyte. What I get out of that is, without electrolytes our muscles can’t form movements and our neurons can’t form thoughts. OK, so we definitely need them.

Do we lose them when we exercise? Not normally. But if we participate in such activities as Ironman events or ultramarathons we do, or else we risk water intoxication – also called water poisoning or overhydration. What? Water intoxication? Why didn’t anyone tell me!

No, it’s not what you think. I didn’t say you could get drunk from water. I said you could be poisoned to death and explode. There’s a difference. It happens if you drink huge amounts of water to make up for lost fluids (as you should do if you are an Ironman-er) without also replacing your supply of electrolytes. It turns out that during extended periods of exercise, if you consume a lot of water to make up for lost fluids, you can get water intoxication due to lack of elecrolytes.

So, is Gatorade really good during exercise? Yes. Are S!Caps even better? Absolutely. But since you don’t lose a significant amount of electrolytes unless you run around the world twice in one day, the normal person doesn’t have to worry about it. The best thing for you would be plain old water. So what was the point of me telling you all this if you’re never going to run a marathon in your life? Just in case you decide to get in a water drinking contest and die.

I guess it’s true what they say: too much of anything will kill you. Except LOLcats that is.

My brother brought this to my attention. He was dutifully earning rice for starving people in Africa at a website pointed out by Jonathan that lets you increase your vocabularical skills by guessing synonyms to increasingly harder words.

He came across a strangely familiar word with an even more strangely familiar word as a possible match, and he thought to himself, “wow this is strangely familiar”. When he told me the story, I was strangely astounded at how immediately familiar it all was.

I realize that’s not what gimcrack means, but it should be. I mean, how often do you see the word gimcrack? And for anyone who doesn’t know, this blog used to be titled “B” before it earned its current name. That’s why this is so significant.

Coincidence? I think… so.

On a side note: if you’re bored, repeat this phrase 10 times: “peculiarly familiarly peculiar and familiar”. I promise you will hate me.

*******************************************

Fun words used in this post:
peculiarly
familiar
coincidence
providence
vocabularical
dutifully
hate
me

I’ve been reading post after post about people switching web hosts to get more storage, bandwidth, control panel awesomeness, setra-setra. I felt left out. So I joined HostMonster. I won’t bore you with all the stats, but let’s just say I’m probably getting more bang for my buck than you.

All I’ll say is that I now have 1.5 TB of storage. That’s more than twice as much storage as I have between all my hard drives combined. For $5.95 per month.

Uh oh, what have I become?

Here’s why I’m posting about this. I’m not trying to brag, I’m trying to help your sorry butt. Changing web hosts scared me because of all the DNS and FTP intricacies. Plus I had to move my installation of WordPress, which you may have noticed if you tried to access my blog earlier today.

After a phone call to my new host, online chatting with the new and the old host, a phone call to my old host, 2 support tickets with the old host, and reading 7 or 8 WordPress FAQs, I finally figured out how to get everything working.

So, I’d like to take this opportunity to reach out to the community. If you have recently been thinking about changing web hosts but were too scared to go through with it, like I was, then I’m here to tell you to go for it. If you have any questions about moving your WordPress installation in particular, I can be of some assistance. There were a few things that I had to do that were not so easy to find in the WordPress FAQs and forums, which may come in handy to you.

Oh, and if you need a place to store everything in your entire life ever created, let me know and I’ll divvy out some storage to you. Shoot.
