Browser-Based ‘OGame’ Sci-Fi-ednessity
Posted on 03. Oct, 2007 by The Gimcracker in Gaming, Stuff On The Internet
Here’s my planet.
I don’t know what that means, but it’s mine. Oh, and I also have resources:
I can use those to build & fuel things. Plus, I’m working on upgrading all my mines to build up tons of resources (which will undoubtedly dwindle away faster than they’re stockpiled).
Someday, I’ll be able to pay attention to this screen:
Those are the other systems in my galaxy that I can either join with or fight against. I have no idea how to do any of that, but that’s what the forums are for I guess.
Wanna be in OGame with me? Ok, go here and create an account. It doesn’t matter if you’re logged in or not, the OGame universe is persistent – meaning all your resources keep building up even when you’re off line.
My coworker showed this game to me last week, but then he got banned because he didn’t follow the rules. He created two accounts in the same universe. That’s not allowed.
He had to start over and now I have more resources than him. We will join an alliance together and send resources to each other using our rusty old cargo ships. It’s the first step towards galactic domination.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the best part – it’s free. Also, since OGame is a text-based massively multiplayer online game, all you need is an internet browser and your fingers. Actually, my coworker lost the use of his left middle finger during an unfortunate flag football incident, but he can still play. So really you don’t even need all of your fingers, just most of them.
Those screen shots up there were taken in Firefox. I believe you can even play on a mobile device, like your iPhone. My brother talks about how to do this in case you’re interested.
Wow.
I wish I had some time to devote to this game. Because it looks fascinating (just from your blog post alone). The only time I could really play it would be at work, but…you know…that would be…um…well…you know…kind of…um…not good.
The greatest part about this game so far to me is that I can just leave it open and check on it every hour or so. It doesn’t require much time actually spent playing it because most of the time you’re just waiting for a building to finish getting build (which takes a few hours) or your resources to build up. It’s all timer based and it’s persistent, like I said, so it doesn’t actually require you sitting there fiddling with it – just let it run in the background and check on it occasionally.
What’s there to lose – it’s free. Just let your stuff build up if you don’t want to mess with it. Maybe just check on it every other night when you get home. It’s fun to see how many resources you can accumulate.
You buy a house and get internet, and your first post back is about OGame?
Now I want to play.
Sorry, I don’t tend to delve into the personal, day-to-day details of my life very much on my blog. Maybe it’s something I should do more…
I guess it’s just a testament to how little I know about the point of my blog.
Funny? Professional? Personal? Hybrid? No idea.
Here’s how I look at it.
Life is a hybrid. You are a hybrid. I am a hybrid. Your blog is a selective imprint of your hybrid self. Therefore it could be a hybrid, too (unless you didn’t want it to be. Then it would just be a…brid???)
So there you have it.
Bri is a hybrid.
Let’s call him Bri-brid.
Hi there, Bri-brid.
Blue bird. Rye bread.
Theodore Giesel’s a hybrid guy. A Hardvard guy? A hybrid guy!!!
One fish. Two fish. Red fish. Blue fish.
Why, come to think of it,
You and I
Are just the sort of hybrid-guy
You’d find atop a hybrid pie*.
A Harvard pie?
A Hybrid guy?
Aye! Aye! That’s I!
Yes, that’s the sorta guy am I.
…but, why?
(the pie is figurative. don’t read into it too much)
How have you not been discovered by a talent agent of some sort yet? I mean, you are an amazing writer and blogger, you can play any film/TV score you hear by memory and ear, and you are a poet the likes of which we haven’t seen since Seuss.
Thanks, Bri-Brid. I try, Bri. I’m a try kind of guy.
Nice alliteration…”seen since Seuss.”
Well, the poem *does* need a little tweaking. Maybe we can work on it at next men’s group and then write a song for it at the piano (to the tune of all the different NFL themese for the various networks)
Now that would be something….
Deal. For the theme, we’ll start with old school CBS, then move to the current Fox theme, then NBC with the bells and the ringing and the ding ding dong dong, followed by the MNF theme, then NEW school CBS, and finally the NFL theme that plays during the copyright spiel they always give about not rebroadcasting the game without written permission blah blah blah. Did I miss any? I might’ve mixed up NBC with CBS with the bells, but you get the idea.
man Jonathan, if you spent half the time on oGame as you spent coming up with awesome blog posts/comments at work, you’d be doing pretty well… In oGame… But then your blog posts would suffer… And no one wants to see that…
Good point. I don’t even think his blog posts would suffer. It’s not like we’re talking about World of Warcrack here. It’s just an innocent little game. How could it hurt him in any way? There’s absolutely nothing bad that could happen from playing this game.
(The devil’s lies are subtle)
Hmmm…so you’re saying I should play OGame, are you? Well, if I have a little time I might set something up later. It sounds neat.
I feel I’m slowly and inexorably being enticed by decietful Bri-Brid’s seemingly innocuous solicitations.
This can’t end well….
Join Universe 31 and join our alliance.
Okay. I have joined Universe 31. My username is tickler.
You guys are in 31? What’re the odds… Weird. So, what’s your alliance called?
The alliance is UNSC. My username is WorldofWTFcraft. Don’t ask me why.
Click on Alliance and send an “application” saying you want to be in the alliance and Jesse will add you.
Have fun!
ok… I’m kind of irritated. I have been working really hard on my planet on universe 12, and now I find that you guys are mostly playing in 31? That sucks. I’ve already got a planet going in 21 too because Jesse started one there or something. Looks like I’ll have to start a third planet now… At least this time I know it’s the “permanent” universe…
Dude, what are you talking about? My main fleet is still on 12.
Anyone still playing oGame? I haven’t logged in for 4 or 5 days. I’m scared to check my resources…
I’m still on 31, raping and pillaging everyone I encounter. I just need some friggin’ deuterium. If you aren’t going to play in 31, start transporting your goods to me.
What’s your fleet like? Do you have hyperspace technology yet?
Ok, I’ve been really really busy in universe 12. I’m *almost* to hyperspace technology. I’ve got a small dome sheild (soon to have a large one). My fleet consists of 3 cruisers, 1 heavy fighter, 6 light fighters, 3 large cargo, 8 small cargo, and a recycler (as well as 8 espionage probes). I have two relatively small colonies as well.
I’m half way to interplanetary balistic missiles, and once I’m there I will begin making war on surrounding planets in ernest.
I left myself open to attack in universe 21 and got pummeled. Anyone still have planets there? I’m building back up and have started going on small raids recently.
I’m building up in universe 31 as well, but not as much. Just sort of letting things grow and upgrading as I can. My focus will shift here more later once I have my planet built up…
Two things:
1. what is the aliance I should be in in universe 21?
2. Why can’t I send circular fleet messages in uni 31?
I got hit with 3 attacks while we were out last night and lost my fleet on 31. I defended 2 attacks fully, but the 3rd guy smashed me.
I’ve got hyperspace tech. 4 and hyperspace drive 2 in 31.
Oh man, I haven’t even checked my oGame accounts since I was at Butler. I’ll have to get on and check tonight when I get home, lest I become addicted again at my new job and get my arse canned. Must… ressurect… the alliance!
Chris, your fleets are killing mine. I’ve never had an account on 21, so Jesse will have to answer that question. I’ve also never sent a circular fleet message, so I can’t answer that either. Brad? Jesse? Pottsky? JWey?
[...] week ago I deleted my oGame account in a fit of rage. At the time, my rank was hovering in the mid 600s and I was about to [...]
